Opening of the Dr Ludwig Simmet Institute for Cryopreservation and Reproduction of Companion Animals

This Institute now offers the commercial preservation, storage and distribution of germplasm, including semen, eggs, embryos and tissue samples to companian animal owners in the US.

It is located at the Minitube International Center for Biotechnology (ICB) in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. The Dr. Ludwig Simmet Institute saves clients time by managing extensive paperwork and eliminates the need for investing in specialized equipment and expertise.

Simply ship chilled semen from your stud animals to Minitube ICB where it will be analyzed, cryopreserved and frozen in straws for on-site storage and for later distribution to national or international locations.

All semen received for freezing is analyzed for concentration, motility and morphology before and after freezing. Further biochemical and immunocytological evaluations can be performed by request (membrane proteins, DNA integrity, etc.). Samples can be purified (GSM), enriched and enhanced before processing for preservation. A full report including CASA generated semen analysis of the sample before and after the freezing/thawing process is sent to each client.

Tissue samples can be processed and preserved for future use. Ovarian and testicular tissues can be rescued from compromised or deceased animals. Using Minitube’s Genetic Rescue Kit, genetic material may now be preserved post-mortem or before specific procedures such as chemotherapy are implemented.

Services include:

  • semen collection
  • oocyte and embryo recovery
  • tissue (skin, fibroblasts, adipocytes, ovaries, testes) processing, culture and preservation
  • computer assisted semen analysis (CASA) for motility and morphology
  • processing chilled semen for freezing
